Trading Places is Latest Exhibit at Gallery 104 & The Dogwood Gallery

Gallery 104 in La Grange and the Dogwood Gallery in Shelbyville are “Trading Places” for their next exhibit to allow artists more opportunities to display and sell their artwork. Trading Places will be open to the public March 26th – April 20th. This exchange show is open to artists representing the Arts Association of Oldham County (AAOC) and Shelby Regional Art Council (SRAC). Only artists representing their respective home gallery were invited to participate.

“The Arts Association of Oldham County (AAOC)welcomes the opportunity to co-op with other arts organizations in Oldham County, surrounding counties and the region including Indiana, to provide a wide range of arts to the Oldham community,” said Jim Cheski, President of AAOC. AAOC is a 501©3 non-profit whose mission is “bringing the Arts to Oldham County.” This is done in a variety of ways including monthly art exhibits such as Trading Places, competitive shows including student shows, art-themed international travel tours, arts education programs/classes, awarding three $5,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Oldham County Schools and working closely in cooperation with The Kentucky Arts Council, Fund for the Arts and the Louisville Arts Association. AAOC operates Gallery 104 on historic Main Street in La Grange. This is one of eleven special exhibits held this year.

The show is comprised of 40 pieces “with a wide range of styles and mediums for 2D works and two very nice wood clocks making up the 3D,” said Jacqueline Bryan, Gallery 104 Show Chair. “Artists really liked the opportunity to be in another gallery for this show to be able to reach a different and broader audience.”

The Dogwood Gallery sent 40 pieces of artwork to Gallery 104 for exhibit, with 14 SRAC members participating. “Several art forms were represented,” said Anna Marie Tracy, SRAC secretary. “Pieces included scratchboard, porcelain painting, watercolor, oils, acrylics, sumi-e, collage, wood working, Gelli plate mono print, photography, mixed media and photo sublimated on Masonite.” Pieces in the exhibit supplied by SRAC include artwork by Ben Nay III, Charlotte Ploetner, Kathy Conroy, Donna Owen, Jim and Aline Keith, Mary Yeager, Anna Marie Tracey, Greta and Charles Bemisderfer, Howard Griffin, Jamie Jarboe, Lori Ault and Mari Mujica. “We greatly appreciate Gallery 104 and their openness to expand the venues for local artists,” said Tracy.

SRAC initiates “field trip” opportunities as part of their mission to assist artists, she went on to say. Last year numerous opportunities were presented with visiting art studios, museums, and galleries. A visit to Gallery 104 with SRAC members was part of this, Tracy said. “It was Jim Cheski’s idea to trade spaces. What a good opportunity for our artists and Gallery 104 artists to expand their venue and viewership!” Shelby artists are “at all stages of artistic careers from professional to beginner. We are looking forward to having a new viewing community and almost all of the pieces are for sale.”

Donna Owen, SRAC Gallery Director and Curator for the show, said that on the outing to Gallery 104 last fall, “SRAC was interested to learn how other galleries display pieces and wanted to get ideas on different marketing aspects.” It was decided an “exchange would give artists from both galleries another outlet for people to see their work.” All of the pieces submitted are for sale. At the end of the exhibit, a People’s Choice award will be given. The public has from March 27th until April 20th to vote.

SRAC/Dogwood Gallery artists will be recognized at a public reception at Gallery 104, 104 E. Main Street, La Grange, KY on Thursday, March 28. 6:30-8pm. AAOC/Gallery 104 artists will be recognized at a public reception at the Dogwood Gallery, 800 Main Street, nit 3, Shelbyville, KY on Friday, April 5, 6:30-8pm.
